Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA Clone All Grain Recipe

To quote Admiral David Farragut, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" Admiral Farragut served in the US Navy during the Civil War and obviously didn't live long enough to try Sierra Nevada's Torpedo Extra IPA, but we're certain he would rather have tangled with a couple pints of this, than the tethered mines (torpedoes) in the Battle of Mobile Bay! This recipe is built on 2-row plus additions of two crystal and dextrine malts. It uses nearly four ounces of Magnum, Crystal and Citra hops. Guaranteed to blow you out of the water! O.G. 1.062, 55 IBU's and is approx 6.4% ABV. We like one of the Chico ale yeasts for this brew! Cheers!

Nice hoppy beer

AIH delivered like 2 weeks after they said and really messed with my schedule. Beer itself is good, minimal instruction provided. I certainly wouldn’t make sense of it or have improvised like I had to if I hadn’t been brewing for a while. Followed limited directions and probably dry hopped too long in primary. Again, no instruction on much. Verify/follow clone recipe from other places and you’ll get better results- the ingredients are there. Still a decent beer, I just wish at this price point AIH delivered as advertised (on time) and provides the intended recipe for the ingredients you’re supposed to use, or don’t provide one (it’s misleading to call it that) and refer people to a better alternative.

Rather dissapointed

S. N Torpedo is my absolute favorite beer. I was very excited to find this kit. I will take ownership of two things, my mash efficiency was low, so I didn't hit the original gravity, and I messed up during mashing, I accidentally shut off all of the heat on my electric mash & boil unit, so my mash temperature dropped to 147∞F, so I had more fermentables in my wort. Still, the beer tastes OK, but does not have the deep copper color of Torpedo. I'll own the lack of mouthfeel, from missing my temp, but that won't affect the color. I suspect it needs some more crystal grains to pick up the color and body.

Incredible Recipe

I brewed this, using my Grainfather. Followed the instructions provided, and hit all of my points spot on. Great tasting beer. Will definitely brew again.

Great smooth IPA

Wow. What a great tasting beer. Sierra Nevada makes some good beers and I really enjoy the Torpedo IPA. I missed my OG a bit and beer ended up with a lower ABV, but still a wonderful tasting homebrew. I added some fining gelatin to my keg and it really cleared up the beer... Will definitely keep this recipe on my top list...
