The Grainfather is an all inclusive all grain brewing system. The system allows you to mash at high extract efficiency by utilizing a pump for easy recirculating of the wort through the mashing process. The grain bed is then easy raised out of the kettle to provide for sparging and draining of the grains. Your mash tun then becomes an electric boil kettle.

The mash temperature and boil are all controlled precisely with an electric heating element. The system comes with a digital temperature controller so you can adjust temperature of your mash with in a degree. This allows for step mashing.

The included pump allows for easy recirculating of your wort during the mash as well as allows for quick cooling at the end of the boil by allowing you to pump through the included counterflow chiller.

This whole 8 gallon system is extremely compact so it makes for easy indoor or outdoor brewing.

Another added feature is the brewing system can also double as a reflux or pot still. All you need to do is attach the appropriate reflux or pot still top.

What can I say, after 4 attempts, I'm getting rid of this, constant clogging of the chiller, no where near my specific gravities, really not worth the effort. I'm going back to my old system which actually worked. Would not spend a dime on this system.

Not a fan
I brewed 7 batches on the system and can honestly say I'm disappointed. Prior to purchasing the system, I brewed 3-gallon batches on my electric range. I'm an experienced home brewer having brewed 80 batches prior to using The Grainfather. I watched (several times) all of the videos on the official website as well as numerous ones posted on YouTube. Pro's • Ability to mash/boil 4-7 gallon batches on the same equipment. • Much of the trub remains in the boil kettle. • Small footprint. • 4/7 batches turned out great. The other 3 are either fermenting or carbonating (keg) Con's • Every step takes more time, from dough in, to mashing, to boil, and especially clean-up. • Very weak pump: filling the fermenter takes 20-30 minutes. • Takes a lot of dialing in 1) grain crush, 2) amount of grains to hit pre-boil gravity, 3) cooling wort. • Much more grain husks/endosperm end up in boil kettle. Using malted wheat is particularly tricky. I scoop them out with a mesh strainer for the first 10 minutes of the boil. • Sparging is a pain. I never came close to a stuck sparge. The sparge water goes through very quickly. It's demands patience while you hand pour 6-8 ounces every 30 seconds or so. I'm stubborn/determined so it's unlikely the unit will be up for sale on Craigslist any time soon. Several techniques I found so far that shorten the brew day are • a heat stick to supplement the boil. I have a HotRod heat stick that works great. I'm also lucky in that I have 2 separate 20 amp circuits for The Grainfather and the 1500 watt HotRod within close proximity to one another. • an immersion chiller (along w/the counter flow) to cool the wort quicker I'm advocating this, but on the 7th batch I used an existing 5 gallon Igloo mash tun and skipped the whole RIMS process. My pre-boil gravity was spot on and the wort was every bit as clear as the 6 prior batches using the pump/basket. I may continue to use a separate mash tun except for step mashes. I definitely won't be upgrading to the new controller!

Great Product and Service!
Spent much less time brewing with the Grain Father. My first brew, the Backyard Pils, turned out to be a great beer. The customer service, value, and reliability of AIH can't be beat!

Awesome Customer Service
As noted by other Reviewers, AIH Customer Service (Ken in particular) is outstanding. There was some minor shipping damage on my first G'father, and Ken sent me a replacement unit while AIH sorted thing out with the shipping company. In terms of the product itself, the G'father is tremendous. An easy, straightforward upgrade from extract to AG brewing. Simple system to operate, easy cleaning, and excellent temp control in a compact system. The hardest part is tweaking your recipes to adapt to the G'father. I have found both G'father Customer Service and AIH extremely helpful in that regard as well.

Awesome system
This system simplifies my brew day with consistent results, minimal space and equipment required. After using propane burners for so long this electric system it is so much easier to control temps. I can now brew in the basement during the cold winter months.

Very happy with Grainfather
I can't say enough about AIH customer service. They went the extra mile helping me with my order and the Grandfather was delivered within a couple of days. The Grainfather is working pretty much how I expected from reading various reviews. Overall I am very happy with it but am considering adding an additional heat stick to reduce the time to reach a boil. Pros: Overall the build quality of the Grainfather is pretty good. I was able to hit all estimated numbers in Beersmith. My mash efficiency went from 65% with my old batch sparge process to 81.3%. I can now easily do step mashes. The wort was clearer with recirculating. Better control of temperatures. Easy clean up. Boil was adequate fluctuating between 212 & 211. I can set temperature goals and don’t have to baby sit to hit temperatures. Overall ramp up times for temperatures weren’t too bad except time to reach boil. 70 deg -> 122 deg took 31 minutes. 122 deg -> 152 deg took 17 minutes. 152 deg -> 168 deg took 4 minutes. 168 deg -> 212 deg took 70 minutes. I was also sparging during the first 30 minutes of this time as well. Cons It took 70 minutes to go from 168 to 211. I would have liked this to be a little quicker. Using the Grainfather took me 6 hours from start to cleanup complete which is exactly the same time my old process using a cooler mash tun and batch sparging took. If the time to go from 168 to boil was reduced from 70 minutes this could have been reduced.

Great Machine
I looked a long time to pick the right setup to move to all grain and found the cost is prohibitive for most systems. When I came across this it immediately got my attention. A relatively affordable setup, electric, and small footprint in my house. I have now brewed 3 batches and have put together 3 more to do over the next month. It has been fantastic! If you are looking for electric and do not want to spend $3000, this is the system for you. Plus, it turns into a pot still! What more could you ask for?

Straightforward All Grain Brewing
I'm a first time brewer and decided to jump in the deep end of the pool to begin with. This system is easy to assemble, easy to use and easy to clean. Very happy with purchase. TIP: If you're using hop pellets with this system, use a hop bag or paint strainer bag. Otherwise, they will clog your filter when recirculating and chilling the wort.

You Won Regret It!
For anyone who is looking to move up from extract to AG, this is it. I made the jump and spent the $$ for this unit and couldn't be happier. Well built, well thought-out product. This is not a purchase, this is an investment into your future of AG brewing.

Easy all-grain in one!
This machine is awesome! It may be a little slower than doing it on a propane burner, but this is a million times easier! It also allows me to do all my brewing in my basement so I can brew no matter the weather. Two thumbs way up!
