The origin of the dubbel was a beer brewed in the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle in 1856. The abbey had, since December of 1836, brewed a witbier that was quite sweet and light in alcohol for consumption by the paters. The new beer, however, was a strong version of a brown beer. In 1926, the formulation was changed and it became even stronger.

This 5 gallon kit Includes LME, Crushed Specialty Grains w/bag, Candi Sugar & Hops

Q: What materials do I need to brew this beer? If I purchase the home brewing kit upgrade #2, will I have what I need?
Asked by: - 10/7/2013
A: The kit includes LME, Specialty Grains, Hops & Grain Bag. You will need yeast for fermentation. The other options below include:

Irish moss (used as a fining agent to get cleaner beer)
Hop bags (to hold hop bags for hop additions)
Sanitizer (which many people have in bulk)
Priming sugar and Bottle caps (used for bottling)

Although you may not need some of these items most people find these items helpful for the brewing process.

The beginner kit #2 will include all the equipment you will need to brew this batch as well.
