Sometimes Change is NOT for the Better
OK, Blichmann may not like this review, but you as a potential purchaser may. First, I already had 2 of the 20 gallon G1 Blichmann brew pots. I got the 30 gallon G2 pot a few months ago. I have 2 batches through the 30 gallon pot used as a boil kettle. I'm left wondering why Blichmann made any of the changes they made. Let's start with the new, rougher brushed finish versus the G1's smooth finish. I don't mind that the G2 exterior is now brushed instead of polished. Water spots are less visible. However, the interior of the G2 pot was supposed to be polished. It is brushed, just not as heavily as the exterior. Perhaps a finer grade sanding belt was used. It needs to be polished. Polishing reduces places for bacteria to hide, critical when using the pot as a mashtun. Polishing makes cleanup easier too. The biggest reason to polish metal is that it reduces corrosion. My first brew session with the G2 pot left it discolored and pitted from contact with the slightly acidic wort. The new lid of the G2 is cheap and flimsy. The metal thickness is only 0.80mm compared to the G1 lid which is 1.3mm thick. There are no annular ridge rings on the new lid which further decreases its stiffness compared to the older lid. The edges of the new lid are not rolled and are fairly sharp with the metal being so thin. Having no rolled edge contributes to the flimsiness. The lid also has the same rougher interior finish as the new pot, so it corrodes easily. The new handles are OK. However, they can no longer be used to hang the old style lid, or much anything else. I don't understand why the brew pot handles and lid handle were changed. It's not like you can or should carry the pot with it full of hot liquid anyway. The new valve is a plus and minus. The plus is that it now has a male 1/2" NPT connection built in. No need to add a 1/2" NPT nipple. It is also easy to take apart and clean if needed. As for the more linear flow characteristics of the new needle type valve compared to the ball valve - who cares? What you lose is the ability to instantly know the status of the valve with a quick glance as one can by looking at the ball valve's handle. All in all, I would not have made any of the changes Blichmann made to the G1. The G2 is inferior to the G1 in every way IMO. Your mileage may vary.
