Q: Is this good for leaf hops? I grow my own hops.
A: This can be used for either Lear of pellet hops without issues
Q: I extract brew, quite often the kits come with specialty grains, can I use this hop filter for the specialty grain steeping step instead of using a mesh bag. Thanks
A: You can definitely use this for your specialty grains rather than the hops. You will just want to make sure there is enough room for the water to circulate some within the hop filter.
Q: Can this item sit on the kettle bottom during use without being damaged or damaging the kettle?
A: The filter is made with 304 food grade stainless so the material make up would be the same as the kettle. It may blemish or scratch the bottom of the kettle if it moves enough on the kettle bottom during use and would be best hung on the side, but can be used rested on the bottom
Q: When will these be available again? They show as not currently for sale.
A: They should be available again within a week of so (Jan 2018) as we are wiaiting on a vendor shipment to hit our building for processing
Q: Is this tapered, or is it 6" in diameter top to bottom?
A: The filter is 6" from top to bottom and is not tapered
Q: How well does this work when using hop pellets?
A: They work great for pellets as long as you have good wort flow moving through the filter on your boil kettle, if only a small portion of the filter is covered it will lead to more clogging that if the hops had more movement. The scree may need to be cleared a few times throughout the boil with a spoon or paddle with heavier hopped beers
Q: Does the dimension of 6" indicate the diameter or the circumference?
A: The 6" measurement is the diameter
Q: Would this work on a 15 gallon boil kettle when brewing 5 gallon batches?
A: This will vary depending on the dimensions of the kettle and where the wort will hit on the filter. You would still want a decent amount of wort coverage on the filter to limit any clogging and better utilize the hops during the boil
Q: I have a converted keg. Would this be the best option for me? I brew 5-10 gal batches.
A: Yes, These connect onto the kegs just fine and have the added benefit of being able to adjust the height with the adjustable hook for larger or smaller batches
Q: Can this or any of the screens also be used for dry hopping?
A: with the open top on this product, it would not be idea from a dry hop filter. We do see a dry hopping tube with the same micron on item#92-2004
Q: Is this too large a basket for a 5 gal IPA?
A: Bigger can be better as this will increase the surface area to limit hop matter covered the side wall of the filter. As long as the height will work with your kettle, this should be fine for a 5 gallon IPA
Q: How many oz of hops is this good for? I often brew 10 gallon batches of IPA.
A: Due to the differences in expansion of pellet hops once added into the wort, there is not a great way to estimate this. Whole leaf hops would take up much more room in the filter, and would limit the amount you can use even more.
