400 Micron Stainless Hop Filter with Adjustable Hook - 6" x 14".
26" from hook to bottom of filter at lowest setting.
Made of a 400 micron stainless steel mesh, this hop filter has an adjustable hook allowing you to place your filter in the perfect position no matter what type of kettle! Placing your hops inside the filter will allow all the hop oils to diffuse into your wort will retaining all the vegetal matter in single (easy to clean) location. It is recommended to use this filter during the boil phase of brewing and its large 254" capacity makes it perfect for up to 10 gallon batches.
Good product
Used it with hops pellets. I like not having the hops in the bottom of my Boil kettle.

Adjust hop filter works well
There's not much to say other than the adjustability of the filter is very convenient. Hop sludge is well-contained in the filter and therefore is not in the fermenter.

Love how it adjusts
I have a homemade boil pot out of a 15 gallon keg that I needed to have adjustability, this one does just that. It's well made and allows for good flow to allow the hop oils to bitter and flavor like no other!

Works perfectly. Impressed!
Wish I would have bought this sooner. Keeps the trub out of the bottom of the boil pot. Almost zero trub. No need to whirlpool for this reason. Clearer wort into the Fermenter. Less wasted wort in the boil kettle. Get this one or one just like it. Highly recommend!

Hop juice maker
Wish I'd bought this thing sooner. I like to keep my setup simple and have been doing BIAB for years. Up until the last couple brews, I had been using hop bags during the boil. But all of the studies I've been seeing show that there's less extraction from hops in bags than loose ones, including those contained in sufficiently large mesh hop filters. More late hot-side hop extraction = more hop saturated flavors in the finished beer + fewer hops to purchase + less wort loss. I noticed a significant increase in hop flavor in my first brew with it, Other Half's All Together hazy IPA. Compared to the last few hazies I brewed, this one just immediately had more pop to it. This filter is the perfect size for a 15 gallon kettle, and I like the adjustable hook so that I can use it for my smaller BK as well.

Love the flexibility
I have the new Anvil Foundry 10.5 and needed something to reach deeper into the boil than my hop spider with bag. The adjustable height is easy to use, it's easy to pull in and out especially when adding my wort chiller. Has been as easy to clean as my silicone mesh bag. Seems well constructed - time will tell. I have only used it on two brews, but have enough under my belt to know that this is a welcome addition to my equipment stockpile.

Great product
This filter allows you to determine how low it sets in the kettle, and does a good job of limiting hop residue while being big enough to allow for good hop utilization.

Good for keggle
I use an electric brew system with heater elements in the bottom of my converted keggles. The opening to my keggle isn't cut completely to the wall of the vessel so I needed a hanger with a wider reach than most filters I've seen. The hook on this filter is perfect to hang from the side of my BK. I also switch between 5 and 10 gal batches. The adjustable arm allows me to drop the filter closer to the bottom (without touching the element) for 5 gal batches or I can raise it higher for larger batches. A small amount of hops does get into the boil with this filter (using pellets). My last bag filter was so fine that I got very poor utilization. The courser filter fixed that. I have had no issues with hops in my plate filler though while brewing super hoppy brews. Also, this filter is good and sturdy.

Should have bought this long ago
Used this 2 times now the last time with 8 oz of pellet hops. I am very satisfied with hop utilization and especially hop particle containment. The wort transfer to the fermentor is so so so much clearer with much less hop residue I used to get using a grain filter bag.

The adjustability is why I purchased this particular hop filter. It works great. It does bang a little on the side of the kettle during the boil but that is not unique to this filter.

So far so good
I have only used this a couple times thus far, but it has been pretty good. I felt it made the boil go much better. Only thing I learned was late additions need to be stirred in and not to let it sit on the bottom of your pot as it will scorch.

Wish I'd gotten it sooner
I bought this filter to help in keeping my filter before the plate chiller from clogging. It worked flawlessly on a hazy IPA with 6 ounces of hops in a 5 gallon batch. I wish I'd had it for the 10 gallons of Imperial Stout I did a few months back.

Hoppy Brew Day to You
Love this new addition to my setup... I feel like I retained good hop utilization, it cleaned up easily with a blast from my hose, and I just eliminated most of the schmeggy hop trub from a big IPA (I happened to be making an 11-gal batch of the AIH Hopslam Clone). Great product. Highly recommend.

Great Product
I was a bit hesitant to purchase this item but that was mostly due to the cost. I was looking at the cheaper, non-adjustable units but decided to spend a couple of extra bucks and am glad that I did. The filter was extremely easy to get situated and worked great at filtering out the sediment. I typically make 5 gallon batches and rarely make IPAs but have every confidence that if I brewed an IPA that it would work fine with multiple ounces of hops. I had the cleanest transfer from the boil kettle that I have ever seen and cleanup of the screen & kettle was a breeze. I highly recommend that you add this to your list of brew day tools!

Great addition to the system
I've been looking for a kettle screen/hop filter for a while, but was always put off by the price. This one is big enough to take a beating on a DIPA in my 22 gal kettle without letting much pass through at all! I've never seen such a hop forward beer transferred to a carboy with such little hop matter. Definitely wish I found this sooner!

Q:
Isn't the 400 micron hop spider meant for leaf hops and 300 micron meant for pellet hops or doesn't it matter. I'm looking for a hop spider for my 10.5 foundry system
Asked by:
Edward Heyrich
- 11/1/2020
A:
either can be used. The 300 microns were previously made for us but were more prone to clogging with pellet. the 400 micron still filters pellet hops but allows more wort flow through the filter

Q:
This looks like a better idea than a grain bag for malt and or adjuncts. Is there a problem in using it for that purpose?
Asked by:
Robert Allen
- 2/6/2020
A:
It is plausible to use for this purpose although the finer micron or mesh size does not leave as much area for pass through with larger particulate items like grains, and more not be as efficient as a grain bag in all cases

A measly 1 oz of pellet hops in a 5 gallon batch clogged up the mesh so badly that when I drained the boil kettle, the filter stayed full. no more than 2 inches of the top portion of the filter was above the wort during the boil. Am I doing something wrong?

The filter can be scraped or cleaned off on the inside with the face of a paddle or spoon if you find the mesh is not draining post boil

You can definitely use this for your specialty grains rather than the hops. You will just want to make sure there is enough room for the water to circulate some within the hop filter.

Q:
Can this item sit on the kettle bottom during use without being damaged or damaging the kettle?
Asked by:
DJ
- 1/29/2018
A:
The filter is made with 304 food grade stainless so the material make up would be the same as the kettle. It may blemish or scratch the bottom of the kettle if it moves enough on the kettle bottom during use and would be best hung on the side, but can be used rested on the bottom

Q:
How well does this work when using hop pellets?
Asked by:
michael schulte
- 8/12/2017
A:
They work great for pellets as long as you have good wort flow moving through the filter on your boil kettle, if only a small portion of the filter is covered it will lead to more clogging that if the hops had more movement. The scree may need to be cleared a few times throughout the boil with a spoon or paddle with heavier hopped beers

Q:
Would this work on a 15 gallon boil kettle when brewing 5 gallon batches?
Asked by:
Todd C.

A:
This will vary depending on the dimensions of the kettle and where the wort will hit on the filter. You would still want a decent amount of wort coverage on the filter to limit any clogging and better utilize the hops during the boil

Is this too large a basket for a 5 gal IPA?
Asked by:
jay wagner

Bigger can be better as this will increase the surface area to limit hop matter covered the side wall of the filter. As long as the height will work with your kettle, this should be fine for a 5 gallon IPA

Q:
How many oz of hops is this good for? I often brew 10 gallon batches of IPA.
Asked by:
Wayne Wischerath
- 3/7/2017
A:
Due to the differences in expansion of pellet hops once added into the wort, there is not a great way to estimate this. Whole leaf hops would take up much more room in the filter, and would limit the amount you can use even more.
