Questions and Answers
The Original Barley Crusher MaltMill, the "Home Brewer's Best Friend" has proven to be just that. A high quality grain mill constructed using materials that will last a lifetime, 1018 Cold Rolled Steel for the rollers, 6061 Aluminum for the mill body and hopper, tool steel for the axles with Oil Impregnated bronze bushings.
Base easily fits a 5 gallon bucket.
Precision machining with Quality Control and a LifeTime Warranty assures the homebrewer that this will be the only grain mill they will ever purchase!
Details:
Rollers are adjustable at both ends to keep the gap spacing parallel giving a uniform crush along the entire length of the rollers.
The gap default setting is marked and set at .039 at assembly. Adjustment range is from .015 to .070 thousands of an inch.
The rollers have a 12 TPI knurl to efficiently pull the grain through the rollers while leaving the hull intact to form an excellent filter bed for sparging.
Comes with a solid base with locators to center the Barley Crusher on a 5 gallon plastic pail. (Pail not included)
The standard hopper holds an even 7 pounds and the optional large hopper holds 15 pounds. Using a 3/8 drillmotor at 500 RPM gives you a crush rate of 6 pounds a minute making the big grain bills fast and easy.
The Barley Crusher is shipped fully assembled. There are no adapters needed to use a 3/8 drill motor.
The Barley Crusher is NOT designed for cracking/milling corn

Wont hold a gap; binds. Buyer Beware!
I bought this on order #18-506536. Approximately 1.5 years ago. I have emailed the owner of the company (BC Products, Inc) and asked for support on the statement from their website: "Lifetime Warranty assures the homebrewer that this will be the only grain mill they will ever purchase". I got back unconcerned emails directing me to change the set screws that hold the rollers in place. I have done this twice with no results. The mill will not hold a gap for more than a few pounds of grain and it binds when attached firmly to a milling table. Company owner will not replace the item despite the fact that I have my paid receipt. Do not Buy.

Solid crusher
I've had this one now for almost eight years and used it on around 250 5 gal batches. As someone else mentioned the rubber band broke pretty early on, but it doesn't really make any difference, I'm not sure why it was there in the first place. It has worked like a champ. I use it with a drill and other than I probably should have gotten the bigger hopper, no issues at all. I did have an issue that people should keep in mind (it wasn't the crushers fault). There was a small pebble in one sack of grain. If the crusher starts acting weird and making grinding noises that may be your problem. Once I dumped the grain out and found the pebble all was OK again. There was a small nick on one roller but it hasn't been an issue.

Good price, more consistency
I recently changed homebrew stores and have been milling my grains at the store. One of the mills at the store wasn't giving the best crush and I saw a drop in efficiency, from high 70's low 80's to 50's 60's... Unfortunately, it took a couple of brewdays to figure this out, fortunately there was a sale on grain mills when i did. First brewday with this mill yeilded 86% efficiency with about a .35 crush (opposed to the .39 crush stated in the directions). Drill milled the grains fine, just don't go all the way with the trigger and mind what direction the drill will rotate once you hit some resistance.

Good value
I have used the Grain Crusher for over a year and crushed/cracked upwards of 250 lbs of assorted barley and wheat malts. The rollers (actually just 1 of the 2) are easy to adjust. When using a drill, go slow. The grains tend to shred more when I crank up the RPMs.

Won't be your last
We've been using one of these at Third Monk Brewing Company for the past year and a half. Unit works great, but the rollers have worn out. The knurls have smoothed and won't grip the grain anymore. Correspondence with the manufacturer shows replacement parts are $50. Also, manufacturer has no phone number, only e-mail. Factor that in to your purchase consideration.

Rubber Ring Broke on First Crush
This is my first grain mill and I used it for the first time to crush 14 pounds of grain with the hand crank and it did well (for reference, this was about 5 hoppers-full when filled about 75%). I decided to double crush the grains and on the second round through the rubber ring that makes the second roller move broke. This was not unexpected, as the instructions state the ring is not necessary for the mill to operate (though I expected it to last longer). This is mostly true in that the friction of the grains will turn the second roller (especially on the first crush), however on the second crush the second roller didn't turn when the hopper was close to empty because there was not enough pressure to turn the second roller. This made it difficult to finish the crush since the grain was not pulled through like when both rollers were turning. Otherwise this appears to be a sturdy grain mill.

2 years and ~50 10gal batches later
I bought this mill over 2 years ago, and have milled around 50 10 gallon batches worth of grain. I use a cordless drill to run it (1st gear). I've been getting amazing/scary efficiencies by conditioning the grain and running a .030 - .032 gap. Watch out for rocks! And don't forget to tear it down and clean/lube it once in a while.

Works great, great efficiency booster
I had always asked for crushed grains from wherever I bought them and I found my mash efficiency came out around 65%. My first time using this grain mill my mash efficiency went north of 75%. It's easily adjustable if you get a feeler gauge (very inexpensive), and I like having the control over my crush and seeing the results first-hand as I go. No last minute brew day surprises. This mill is solidly built, fits a 5 gallon bucket just right, and is a good value for the money in my opinion.

Could Not Be More Satisfied
Just used my Barley Crusher for my first batch since I received it and I could not be more satisfied with it and the results. My local homebrew store''s crusher was not set properly and they would not dial it in any finer. So the coarse crush had dropped my mash efficiencies into the low 71-73% range. Today I hit 84.1% which is right in line with what I hit on a friends Barley Crusher. Both set at the factory settings. Yes I am happy, yes I am satisfied and will order from Adventures in Homebrewing again.

Q:
One roller came with a black rubber band around it. Am I correct in assuming this should be removed? Further, no instructions for use or adjustment were in the box, would you happen to have anything like that you could share with me?
Asked by:
Caysey
- 2/6/2018
A:
The black rubber ring is just to protect the rollers in transit and it meant to be removed or fall off during the first few uses. The manufacturer does not currently supply an instruction sheet, but the two screws on the backside of the roller base can be loosened, to allow for the adjustment knob on the side to be used to open or close the gap setting to you liking. The screws can then be closed to hold the rollers in place at that setting. We start with about a .038" gap and adjust from there This is about the width of a credit card or ID passed through the center of the rollers

The gap is adjustable to .070 thousands. We would not recommend this for milling corn. We believe .070 is not enough of a gap to to mill corn.
