Q: Hi, I would like to try bentonite to clear my beer. I am guessing a good time to do it is right before pitching the yeast and primary fermentation. I usually also use Irish moss during the last 10-15 minutes of the boil. What is your recommendation? How should I prepare and when should I and apply bentonite ? Thanks.
A: We would not recommend bentonite for clarifying beer. It could affect the taste of hops and the proteins in the beer. Bentonite is similar to clay and works great in wine.
