For polishing not clearing
This is for polishing an almost polished wine... It is brilliant when used on a red wine with number 2 pads... But the wine has to be very clear when you use this.... It is not for filtering wine !!! It is to polish a wine that has been clearing for weeks !!! Most complaints that I have read probably used this on foggy partially cleared wine trying to save time.... If you buy this I would recommend putting wide rubber bands around the knobs for a better grip to help tighten them... I have a stern hand grip and I still need a little help... I would buy this only if you want to invest more time and money to have a beautifully clear wine. But if you drink a lot of wine it comes with more work and money... It is great if you give a lot away as gifts.....

If you are doing a five gallon carboy once in a while, it works fine. It is a little messy. Be sure to soak the pads for a while in water (don't just wet them). Be sure to tighten the screws DOWN not just pretty tight. Make sure the recycle tube from the drip tray is functioning. But you will see a noticeable difference in the brightness of your wine, even if you are in the habit of racking three or more times. Next time, I'd save up for the big brother model.

Try something else
I would not buy this item to filter wine. I've been making wine for a long time and have been looking for something like this, but this unit is messy and slow. I also lost 2-3 bottles equivalent of wine due to the water used to saturate the filter material. It comes out of the pump diluted and undrinkable until the filters are fully saturated with wine. If you have a lot of time for prep and clean up then this pump is for you. Otherwise using the pre-filter stuffed with cheesecloth with a little co2 on the back end is what I am using now and it works almost as well.
