PICO Keg/Keggle False Bottom Assembly
PICO Keg False Bottom has our unique 16% open design. Our PICO Keg/Keggle False Bottom lends itself to better efficiency and a clearer sparge.
The 2 halves fit snugly into the keg preventing grain leakage while resting on 2.25" tall supports above the port. This allows you to mash in a keg kettle without scorching grains. Diameter is 15-3/8" which matches the inside diameter of the 1/2 barrels.
This is the most efficient false bottom we have ever seen or used.
These PICO False Bottoms should not be used with a pump discharge barb of over 3/8". Using large 1/2" barbs will create too much suction on the false bottom and can cause the stands to bend. We only recommend 3/8" tubing and barbs down stream of your Mash Tun.
For proper installation
, place the false bottom on top of the supports with the bent pieces facing up.
Brilliantly Simple
This is a great item. Goes together very ez! Makes it so nice to drain mash without all the grains. Cleans up very ez.

Fantastic
This thing works great! It fit like a glove in my sankey keg, and is very easy to install/manage. I am using this for my HERMS system and it worked great! Like another review stated, I am also using 1/2 inch hoses and fittings with no problems at all!

Well Made, Easy to Use
Very well constructed item and easy to use/assemble. Great fit in my keggle. Used with a HERMs set up with half inch fittings despite the warning in the product description without issue. Definitely recommend this if you are looking for a keggle false bottom option.

Great Quality - but Problems
Great Quality Product but creates about a 1.5 gallon dead space under the mash. Have to increase the amount of mash water and reduce sparge water. Which creates problems with brew efficiency. Looking for other options.

Love It!
I had problems with a hinged false bottom laying flat on the bottom of my keg. Since the keg had some dings in it, it didn't create a flush seal. I tried the Pico false bottom and I get a super tight seal around the walls instead of the bottom. I still managed to cram about 30lbs of grain in the mash tun with a little room to spare. Love it!

Great Mash
So I have used these around 2-3 times so far within my Keg and could not be more pleased. Have no issues whatsoever with grains getting by and into my lines which I push through pumps. Well worth it for the money.

Drastically improved our brew day
Yesterday was the first time my brew partner and I used the false bottom. We did two very big beers (1.12 OG stout and a barleywine around 1.08) and partigyled the stout. We previously used a cooler tun with copper tubes slit to allow drainage. We did ok with that and it was a good tool but we got stuck sparges in that thing quite a bit and never seemed to hit our OG on any of our brews. ALL THREE of our beers came out with EXACT OG numbers that we calculated. Absolutely zero problems draining our new tun with this. We lifted up the plates after removing all of the grains and there were practically NO grains below. You could visibly see where the ring of grains stopped at the height of the plates. Absolutely recommend this thing. Another thing I absolutely recommend is to be careful when cleaning out the tun if you're doing it by hand. I was using my hand to scrape together the remaining pieces at the end and some of the slits acted like a food processor... sliced the hell out of two of my fingers! Even cleaning the plates I wasn't paying attention close enough and was gently wiping my hands over the plates and still got small cuts. Overall, I give this thing a raving 5 star review. Couldn't recommend it highly enough if you do big beers or big batches.

Worked Perfectly
Wanted to let you know that I used the stainless steel false bottom and it worked perfectly. Very nice setup you have there! My efficiency was close to 75 to 80% which is pretty good for me and is consistent with previous batches. I am very happy with the product and I hope you sell a bunch of them. See you in a month or two when I need to do some restocking of my brew supplies. I''ll have to bring in a sample of my IPA that I made with the maiden voyage next time I''m in. Thanks again!

Q:
Its mentioned that we should recirculate in order to account for the dead space. Do you recommend a recirculation at the beginning of the mash, at the end or for the full duration of the mash?
Asked by:
Jude DuPart
- 11/13/2020
A:
a steady recirculation during the mashing process would be best

Q:
If using a dip tube to reach the dead space should that be accounted for in sparge water or mash?
Asked by:
Jude DuPart
- 11/13/2020
A:
the use of a dip tube or pick up tube will cut down the amount of dead loss used in calculating the amount of strike or sparge water

I have a 50L keg converted to a mash tun. Internal diameter is a 15 1/4". Others have notice a bit of room on standard US kegs, is there enough wiggle room that I can make this fit?
Asked by:

The outer edge of the false bottom plates would be 15 3/8" so while possible it might work on a keg with a more narrow inner diameter would best use on a keg with the wider ID to make sure the plates can be properly added into and removed from the keg

Q:
I am currently designing and acquiring parts to switch to all grain. Using 16 gallon keggles for both the brew pot, & mash tun, and an 8 gallon Keg for the hot liquor tank. It will be a HERMS system, using a 25 foot 1/2" HERMS coil, the Blichmann Auto Sparge, and the Blickmann Rip Tide pump. The Mash tun will have a 1/2" NPT bung welded on the bottom as a bottom drain. I'm wondering if the 1/2" lines will be ok if I throttle the pump down with the integrated flow adjustment, or would I be better off with a standard domed false bottom? Thank you for your help!
Asked by:
Ryan Hoskins
- 6/14/2018
A:
You should be able to run the pump, with restriction on the 1/2" valves as this is a common practice with this false bottom type on a rims or herms system

Q:
How snug should the false bottom be? I feel like there is a fraction of space between the 2 plates as well as between the 2 plates and the keg wall. Can you post a pic/video of whatbit should look like?
Asked by:
Matt
- 4/26/2018
A:
This may happen from time to time as kegs will vay a bit in the width depending on the wear and tear of the keg. The inner two flaps or tabs, can be bent outward slaightly which will push the false bottom outward towards the sidewall of the keg to fit snugly into the opening for a better fit.

Q:
If this false bottom isn't made for 1/2" tubing, what other options are there for keggle systems that have 1/2" tubing and hardware already installed throughout the system?
Asked by:
Carl
- 11/11/2017
A:
Currently the pico bottom needs more restriction on the draw from the kettle to limit compaction of the bottom. This would be the only current keggle false bottom we provide at this time

Q:
I currently have the pico false bottom and I’m planning on adding a pump for recirculating the mlt. Will a 115v chugger pump be safe to use? Also what is the suggested tubing id size to use?
Asked by:
Dale Boiter
- 10/10/2017

The 11v chugger would work just fine for re circulation. Either a 1/2" ID tubing or 3/*" would work fine on this type of system

Q:
I purchased the keggle and pico from you and getting ready to use for first time. So if my normal recipe uses 4 gallons of water do I have to use extra to account for the space under the bottom? And if so won't this lower the gravity? Any brewing instructions on your site for using this system?
Asked by:
Glenn
- 6/9/2017
A:
There will be about 2 gallons of "Dead loss" underneeth the false bottom that will need to be calculated into the water used for sparging. If you are recirculating you would not have to account for loss in efficiency so long as the wort is being pushed back through the grain bed continually. Most brewing software now does have a function to be added when using a keggle with a false bottom to allow for the dead space in your water and gravity calculations

Q:
I already have a welded keg that I'd rather not modify. The ball valve is too high to work with this false bottom. Is it possible to order one of these with a hole for the dip tube in the center (or slightly off-center so only one plate needs to have a hole). If not is the material thick enough that I could drill a hole myself without bending everything all to heck?
Asked by:
Dave
- 5/25/2017
A:
the false bottom supports and screen can be modified to adapt a dip tube. We have not tested the screens with any modifications to know the results, and any mods made after shipping would void the warranty or return of the product.

Do you recommend this with a herms system or just recirculate in the mash tun? Thanks
Asked by:
Rob
- 4/4/2017
A:
This system can be run with a HERMS coil if you prefer, but this would be up to the user. Typically most brewers just use this system as a RIMS as modifying the HLT wouldn't be needed at that time.

It shouldn't be a problem as the biggest thing you want to avoid is too heavy of a vacuum being created by the pump that can compact the false bottom and cause a stuck sparge

Q:
Hello! Two questions. Will this false bottom clear ball valve on the keggles with ball valve your currently selling for $99 and secondly, is it recommend to place thermometer probe above or below the false bottom? Using as mash tun. Thank you!
Asked by:
matthew harding
- 1/4/2017
A:
This will fit on *most* keggles with the couplers welded on. I recommend leaving us a note or giving us a call before or after ordering so we can make sure to add the special instructions to make sure we grab a keggle that will work with this Pico False Bottom. I recommend installing the thermometer above the false bottom if you are using it for mashing as this will be the most important temperature that you will want to monitor. Cheers!

Q:
I am looking for a false bottom for my keggle that would help keep the hop pellet particles from clogging my drain valve. The drain valve (weldless) is installed at the lowest point without a dip tube. I feel the PICO False Bottom will clear the valve but will it help reduce the hop particles making it to the drain valve after the boil? I do BIAB if it helps better understand where I'm coming from. Thank you!
Asked by:
Paul
- 12/9/2016
A:
Paul,
While it may help to reduce some of the pellet matter at the bottom of a kettle during draw off, we do not recommend these false bottoms for use in a boil kettle, and to be used in a mash tun set up only. The false bottom is help down only by gravity and by the weight of a mash to be held in place. During the boil the false bottom can be lifter slightly or dislodged by the evaporation at the bottom of the kettle, and would not provide and efficient filter

Q:
I see that the center of the support is taller than the edge of the support to accommodate the curvature of the keg bottom. Does the 2.25" height measure at the center or the edge? My outlet port is just under 2.25" from the edge, but well over that from the center of the keg. If it doesn't fit, may I return it for a refund?
Asked by:
Michael
- 9/6/2016
A:
The 2.25" is in the center of the support. Gonna be a tough call without trying it out!
Yes you can absolutely return it if it's unused and doesn't fit. All you will be responsible for is return shipping cost.
