Wow... Great IPA
First time brewing this recipe. I'm a huge fan of Blind Pig by Russian River and wanted to try the "Pliney the Elder" double IPA. My method is BIAB, so I had to alter my water volumes. Fermented in primary for 10 days, then dry hopped in carboy with hop bag (5 oz. of hops it a bit, so wanted to keep my beer as clean as possible) for 8 days. Racked to keg... Great tasting beer. Clean and smooth off the palette. I definitely plan to brew this again.

Everyone loves Pliny!
I have made extract clone kits of Pliny the Elder from 2 other suppliers. This is the first all-grain batch I have done. Always a hit and this is no exception. Unfortunately I delayed a while before using the kit and the hops lost a bit of their impact because I failed to store the hops in the freezer. If you buy this kit (and you should!) freeze the hops until brew day!

Okay beer
Beer is good. You will need a LARGE mash ton. If you're asking what is a mash ton, this recipe is not for you. My biggest criticism is all the all-grain recipes come with the same generic recipe. There is no specifics for priming sugar, time to place hops (and there is alot of hopes!). Chances are if your brewing at this level you can figure it out, but when I buy someone elses' recipe I dont want to think.

Excellent Beer
By far my favorite brew so far! This kit makes a fantastic double IPA. I love this hop combination. Perfect balance of malt and hops with a very smooth bitterness.

Amazing
First let my say I have never had the original. This kit is beautiful, the aroma is bright, the body a nice amber, and the flavor fantastic for any hophead. I used the California yeast option and this is the best kit I have ever done. Totally amazing IPA. Will make many more times.

Outstanding
Turned out very good. Received nothing but positive feedback from folks that tried it. Many never have had the real Pliny but most said it was as good or better than many IPA's they get at local breweries.

Worth it
Let me start off by saying I dislike IPAs. I have never been lucky enough to have the original, but this stuff is great. All of the people I gave bottles to loved it. Fermented and dry hopped it all in the same carboy.

Wonderful Beer
This is my second attempt at Pliny, the first was good and this second batch is very good. The kits are also very convenient with all ingredients laid out, it is hard to go wrong. Thanks AIH.

Q:
Hi! I just received a Pliny the Elder kit for Christmas, and I'm looking for a more detailed hop schedule than what the recipe has. Is there a detailed hop schedule available?
Asked by:
Nick Hunter
- 12/27/2019
A:
This recipe follows the standard 60, 15, 5 minute additions for the buttering, flavor, and aroma hops. Knock out or game out hops are added just as you stop the boil and dry hops are added after fermentation in the secondary fermenter

Does the extract clone require a chiller or will normal room temp be ok?
Asked by:

fermentation aty room temp will be fine. ideally you would want to chill the wort down to yeast pitching temps with an ice bath or wort chiller before adding the yeast

Any of the options shown will ferment and give the profile close to what is being usedo n the batch commcercially. I prefer WLp001 myself on this one but either of the options given will give you a good solid finished product

I use ro water and also use Brun Water to help get ph and salts right. Will I be able to enter grist bill or are the grains all in one package? Cheers
Asked by:
Ben Kalota
- 5/19/2018

The grains as shipped on each kit would be combined before processing. We do send along a recipe sheet to plug into brewing software prior to brew day to see if you need to adjust pH or mashing to suit your water and systems as needed

Q:
What is the recommended pre-boil volume for this? I didn't know if the dry hops addition creates volume loss later. Also, is one pack of the dry yeast sufficient for this big brew? Thanks!
Asked by:
Thomas
- 5/2/2018
A:
a yeast starter is reccomended or pitching addtional packs to accomodate the higher gravity. Preboil voulumes will be based a bit more on the volume loss to evaporation on your system and burner set up, but typical loss is between 1-1.5 gallons. Hop filters, muslin bags and whirlpooling can all be used ot help reduce the trub produced by the hops

Q:
There is no hop schedule for the boil. What are the addition times? There is 1lb of priming sugar amd another 5oz package. Add the 1lb 10 mins left on boil anf the otjer 5oz pkg os for bottling? On the dry hopping... when would you suggest racking to secondary and adding the dry hops? Thanks! Looking forward to this brew!
Asked by:
Shawn Burrell
- 2/27/2018
A:
the batch follows a standard 60, 15,5 minute addtion for the bitternig, flavoring and boil hops. The Knockout or flame out hops are added just as you cut the heat and begin chilling. The 1lb corn sugar is added at the last 10 minutes of the boil and the 5oz is used for bottling. The Secondary process can start with the dry hop addtions once the batch has hit within 1-2 of the finished gravity

Q:
Ok I am doing this in The Graindaddy then using the catalyst fermenter for the first time which I think this will work great with? I am assuming the hop schedule is 60, 45 15, flame out? So what would you recommend for The Catalyst dry hopping considering it is primary, secondary, priming and bottling. Also am my spargeing at 170 or 200? I don’t want to screw this up even if this is a close clone it would be awesome? I get this beer occasionally from a friend who travels to Nor Cal its really a good beer, but I would rather produce it myself instead of all the trouble getting it? Cheers!!
Asked by:
Dave
- 11/29/2016
A:
This beer uses a 60,15,5 and flame out schedule in addition to the dry hopping in secondary. If fermenting in all one vessel, I would utilize hop muslin bags, or a filter of some sort and add the hops directly into the fermenter. The sparge on this would depend on your mash tun set up. I generally use 190 as my bench mark for sparging in my cooler system.

Q:
What is the recommended dry hop schedule. You only list hops used but not an order. It's not throw all of them end after fermentation ends is it?
Asked by:
Fred
- 11/11/2016
A:
Transfer to secondary and put all of the dry hops in the fermenter. We've made this here at the shop quite a few times and it turns out excellent!

Q:
How long will the ingredients stay fresh if I split this into two parts and brew 2.5 gallon batches at a time on different dates? What is the best way to store the grains?
Asked by:
Jerry West
- 10/25/2016
A:
We recommend airtight food grade containers for storing grains and hops. The grains can be left in a cool, dark, and dry place for up to one year and remain fresh. The hops should be stored in the fridge or freezer in an airtight container as well. Hops will be usable up to a year, but the freshness will decrease unless they are sealed properly. Thanks for the question!

Q:
Will this recipe work with a 5 gallon cooler mash tun?
Asked by:
Alex
- 6/20/2016
A:
Thanks for asking. Unfortunately the grain bill for this recipe is too big for this cooler. These coolers can fit about 12 pounds of grain.

Q:
If I plan on making 2.5 gallons of this beer should I just cut everything in half? Or is it more complicated than that?
Asked by:
Chris
- 11/24/2015
A:
You can divide the recipe in two, and you will absolutely be close enough to make two great 2.5 gallon recipes.
