German Made Speidel Fermenters
Speidel Fermenters made in Germany are available in a range of sizes 3.2 gallons all the way up to 31.7 gallons. Check out Adventures in Homebrewing’s Speidel Fermenters including accessories and replacement gaskets.
The Speidel 20L Plastic Fermenter is great for small batches beers. I’ve been pretty happy with this fermenter, but I prefer the Speidel 30L Plastic Fermenter so that I can ferment a full 5 gallons with room for dry hops.
All the Spiedels are made of undyed, food-safe PE plastic that can handle up to 140° F. The particularly thick wall not only provides stability but also preserves its aroma. The large opening allows a thorough cleaning, which is very easy anyway due to the extra smooth inner walls and the well-thought-out curves.
The lid has two parts, an outer ring and the inner lid with O-Ring connections, which creates an airtight connection. There are replacement gaskets available if needed. The storage cap will also fit snugly on the spigot as they are the same size and threading. Once you are ready to ferment, the airlock and bung fit into the opening on the lid.
All the Speidel Fermenters are easy to carry by their heavy duty handles. Speidel’s product specifications are rated for up to 66 lbs each or 132 lbs when using both handles.
When it is time to transfer or keg, the spigot makes this job easy. I push a piece of sanitized tubing over the spigot, making sure it fits tight. Slowly open the spigot and begin the transfer, no siphoning required. The spigot sit’s high enough on the fermenter that it leaves the trub at the bottom.
Cleaning these Speidel Fermenters is easy as well. With a wide opening, I was able to fit my whole hand inside to clean before rinsing. Getting the fermenter ready for the next use is also easy. I typically use PBW - Powdered Brewery Wash with some hot water.
It was definitely a switch from traditional plastic buckets, but well worth the investment.
