The Stirstarter Yeast Stir Plate 5L

Looking for a gadget that will improve your beer? Use The Stirstarter!!

Introducing "Stirstarter 5L", the stir plate large and strong enough to stir a 5L starter!  It has a larger 8" x 6" base, ball bearing drive motor and drive magnets with 15 lbs. of pull force. A low voltage (110V), plug-in wall transformer provides power to the unit. . A Teflon coated 1" x 5/16" stir bar is included

(2" stir bars are too long for this device, while we have had success using the 2" bar, it will be "thrown" from the magnet when the motor is at high speeds.)

A "keeper" magnet is also supplied to lock the stir bar in place while the
yeast is pitched, so the stir bar won't end up in your fermenter!

Good product, expensive for what it is, instructions confused me
This is expensive for what it is. A basic plastic box with a few electronics, power transformer, and 2 magnets. I didn't know what was inside the box or I would have built my own. To be brutally honest, it is only worth about half the price. Instructions need clarifying. I didn't know when to use the keeper magnet. It is taped to the instructions, but not mentioned until almost the end. I thought it was to keep the stir bar from throwing during use. Also, he mentions pitching the yeast twice. Yeast is only ever pitched once. I think the writer assumes everybody uses wort to make a starter. I never do. Always DME and water. The way he explains this is confusing to me. I find it strange that AIH has an optional stopper and airlock, yet the author clearly says DO NOT use them, and several brewing web sites say the same thing. 3 stars because of the cost, and the instructions have a few points have need to be clarified.

Stirstarter Yeast Stir Plate 5L
Out of the box this unit did not work. I heard something rattling around inside and opened it up to inspect. The PVC pipe and magnet assembly had lost its adhesion to the fan. I was able to glue it back in place and use. I was expecting a large fan for the 5L model but it appears pretty small. I have made two starters with it thus far and it's worked fine. In the future I would recommend building one yourself with the components listed on the Stirstarter website.

Stir Plate
If you think you need speed, try the alternative of shaking a ball jar every 30 minutes, same idea but you get some sleep. Slow down the plate, get awesome results. You'll see!

Worked Great!
I used this stir plate last weekend to make a 4000 ml starter and it had no trouble keeping the liquid moving and it was large enough to keep the 5000 ml flask securely on the base. Great Product.
