Two Hearted Clone Recipe Kit
One of our most popular recipes in the shop! This is our take on cloning the very popular Bell's IPA. Recipe includes 2-row and light crystal malts, as well as four ounces of Centennial hops (one for dry hopping!). It has an original gravity of 1.069, and is 7.9% by volume using our recommended "Chico ale yeast", or referred to now as American Ale yeast in the drop down yeast options.
Yield : 5 Gallons
Original Gravity : 1.064
Final Gravity : 1.016
Color / SRM : 6.80
Alcohol by Volume : 6.18%
IBU (anticipated, alpha acids can fluctuate) : 71.31
Specialty Grains : Crystal 10L
Hops : Centennial
Recipe Includes : Liquid Malt, Specialty Grains in a grain bag & Hops

Best batch yet!
After a few mishaps with 5 gallon batches, switching to 2.5 gallon batches and revamping my set up, this was my first 5 gallon in years. And it is hands down the best yet! I used the BrewVint booster and increased my fermentation temp, which resulted in an estimated 8.1% ABV. Will definitely be making again as an all grain.

Nice Hoppy IPA
I keep a Two Hearted in my regular rotation. There is either one on tap or kegged waiting in line. My favorite thing to do is add an extra once of Centennial hops to the last 15 minutes of the boil. It enhances the character of the beer. Leave it in the keg in a cool place for a month to mature and you have a great IPA.

Tasty treat
I left this in the primary for 8 days and a full two weeks in the secondary. Came out great, not quite as good as Bell's (I had the brew day temp a little low I think) but still a very hoppy IPA. Only my 4th brew and it was easy; good for new brewers.

Great as is or modified
This is a great imitation of Two Hearted and can also be used as a base for other IPA recipes. My best brew yet was an aggressive Citra dry hopping version of this. Have also done a custom version of this with Apollo added for bittering, less centennial, and dry hopped with El Dorado for a tropical fruit finish.

Best home brew yet
This really is a clone of Bell's. It has been our favorite and friends and family who have tried this brew. We let the beer sit in the first carboy for two weeks and then sat in the secondary fermenter for four more weeks, then bottled.

Not quite 2 Hearted
This is a decent IPA but it doesn't taste like 2 Hearted, fails the side by side comparison. The aroma and flavor have curiously improved with age. At 4 weeks in bottles it was quite bitter and unbalanced and didn't start to smooth until about 8 weeks. At over 3 months now it is not bitter, and has a nice mellow grapefruit aroma and flavor, maybe a slight sweetness. Also much darker than 2Hearted! Not bad though and good showcase of the centennial hops.

IPA for everyone
This is the 3rd time brewing my favorite recipe and I made a few changes to see how it would turn out. I added an extra pound of LME, increased the aroma hops to 2 oz and dry hopped with an ounce of Zythos instead of Centennial to give this recipe a little pine and spice, but not much. I still wanted the citrus to be the dominant aroma. The results were a bigger IPA with more depth of flavor and aroma. I think I made a perfect beer even better, somehow.

Excellent First Brew!
First attempt at beer making. Love the original but this kit is simply better. More hoppy without losing the signature grapefruit/citrus of BTHA. Follow instructions, pay attention to details and your first brew will be excellent with AIH. Thank you! 11-12 days primary 7 days secondary with dry hops 13 days in bottle (Super Bowl deadline) and voilĂ !

Best kit yet!
I have brewed about five kits and this is by far the best one I have made. It is as good or better than anything I have ever had at a bar or restaurant. When people try one they can't believe I actually made this! I fermented for 6 days then dry hopped with 1 oz centennial hops for 2 more weeks. 6.56 ABV when I bottled. This is the best. I only buy from AIH from now on!

My first brew
Chose this kit for my first batch. Fermented for 7 days, dry hopped for another 7 in the primary, then kegged. Very flavorful with grapefruity hop bitterness, though maybe not quite as much body and aroma as its namesake. Looks like they've recently changed it somewhat to use all LME.

Spot on!
If you like Two Hearted, you have no reason not to purchase this kit now. My version came out slightly darker. However the taste, lacing, head retention and carbonation came out spot on. I added another 1/2oz of Centennial to the dry hop. Side by side, you cannot tell the difference!

Spot on
This kit was my 3rd attempt at home brew....each has gotten progressively better. This is a simple receipt, and others have stated a bit of patience pays off. Had some Bell's Two Hearted on hand and did a "blind" taste test....as much as I like the original all responses were favorable toward the home brew. I will try this brew again when I try all grain brewing...

Super Beer
Been home brewing for about 2 years. Worked through several styles, have settled on IPA as favorite. This kit is very simple, and if you will be patient, will give you an unbelievable homebrew. Single hop is all that's used. Let it age a little, don't get in a hurry. After 3 weeks in keg this is better than any commercial IPA you can buy. Not overpowering, just a smooth drinkable beer. RECOMMEND HIGHLY.

Nice match to Bell's Two Hearted Ale
The product arrived in very good condition. The yeast activated perfectly and after pitching it started to ferment quickly. Fermentation was slow, even at 70F. It took 13 days for primary to complete. But it was worth it. Taste coming out of secondary (dry hop) was good but had a bit of a sharp back taste. If it matures a little during carbonation, this is going to be one good keg of beer.

Decent IPA but needs a bit more body
This recipe was very easy to follow and produced a very drinkable IPA with a nice hop profile but did lack a little body. I plan on making this again soon, but I think I will do a partial mash next time with the specialty grains and maybe a little 2-row just to increase the body. Probably a 3.5/5 if I could enter it.

What is best way to store the liquid malt extract and yeast for several months before I can get to brewing? I was thinking in refrigerator or freezer perhaps?
Asked by:

the yeast can be stored in the fridge for up to 6 months from the manufacture date on the package. The LME is best kept at room temp in a col dry place and used within 60 days of purchasing

yeast would need to be added to the kit from the drop down menu as it is not included in the cost-any of the offerings will work fine, I myself am partial to Wpl001 for this recipe!

I just brewed this. When I checked my original gravity it is at 1.054. Did I do something wrong?
Asked by:
James Mcnally
- 5/23/2020
A:
Checking to make sure the batch was only topper up to 5 gallons even, and that the wort was well mixed when added into the fermenter so the high sugar wort blended OK with the water would be best. Taking the reading as close to 60 degrees as possible where hydrometers are calibrated at would be best to take a 2nd check

The kits are best used within 30-60 days of the purchase date. Hops and grains can store for 6-8 months when properly stored but the LMe and yeast typically are best used as close to the purchase date as possible to maintain a viable product

Q:
My buddy told me to add the Wyeast (Liquid) and the Safale-05 together when brewing this. Is that a wise option?
Asked by:
Michael
- 7/10/2018
A:
It would be optional to add both, either one will work for a Two Hearted clone. Adding both packets will not do any damage to your final product. If you do decide to add both this would be "double pitching" your yeast. This can be done to prevent any stalling that may happen if you have to much sugar in your wort.

Q:
Looking at description it states best with Chico Ale yeast. I do not see that option on the check out nor in the list of yeast available. Can you let me know which yeast it is. Also would that change the brew/ferment directions that come with this kit?
Asked by:
Dave
- 11/27/2017
A:
Chico ale is the older name for California/American Ale yeast used by the yeast suppliers. WLp001/Wyeast 1056 or S-05 would all be the appropriate yeast for this kit, and would be used as directed by the manufacturer on the yeast pack

Leaf hops are not produced and as readily available year round like pellet hops are, so pellet is the default for any of our kits. We do have a selection of leaf hops available on the site, but would need to be ordered a la carte with the other kit items, and would not qualify for the kit cost as listed.

Did you guys stop including the boil instructions online? Cannot seem to find them. Don't want to buy a kit I cannot see instructions for.

We are currently changing the format on most of our recipes. In the meantime, we pulled the recipes from the website to prevent confusion. We apologize for the inconvenience

Q:
I have the 2 hearted clone recipe and have read on this Q&A to leave in primary fermenter anywhere from 7 days to 11-12 days. Do you have a more specific length of time?

A:
Your hydrometer is the main tool you need to use to figure out when your batch is done with fermentation. Two weeks is playing it safe if you are not following these steps.
