Q: what do I use to clean and sanitize the barrel prior using for secondary fermenter? will that remove the flavor of the whiskey?
A: The whiskey leftover on the inside of the barrel typically has enough antiseptic quality to it that you dont need to do a rinse the first time through. You can use a splash of whiskey or two on the inside of the barrel and spin it to coat with a new fresh whiskey or can use hot water, or a potassium metabisulfite rinse to sanitize it for peace of mind before the first use, or to clean for follow up use after the first batch
Q: Hi there, I'm interested in the used 5 gallon barrels, I notice that in the photo there are both rye and bourbon barrels. Is it possible to place an order and request a bourbon barrel?
A: This can be added to the notes on the order to do our best to accomodate. An order will not be held if we only have one or the other, and will ship what we have on hand to fulfill the shipment
Q: Are these meant to be used for primary fermentation or secondary for aging?
A: secondary fermentation for ageing would be best
Q: What size stopper can be used with this barrel? Do they come with one?
A: The barrels will have a temporary bung applied for storage when they arrive. It is best to measure the opening on the barrel you receive as there is subtle differences but is typically between a #8 and #9.5 bung on most barrels
Q: What is the toast level of the barrels? and Does it matter as much, once the barrel has been used?
A: these barrels typically have a level 3 char. The soaking of the previous spirit is the biggest draw as it will impart into the beer/cider/wine etc. vs. a fresh stock barrel that might have the char, but no previous spirit flavors
Q: If I'm barrel aging homebrew, how many times can the barrel be reused? Is it a one-and-done thing, or can they be reused multiple times?
A: The barrel can be used more than once, but the essence of the spirit will fade over time leaving just the oak flavor imparted. They can be retreated with a store-bought spirit to re-impart whiskey flavor if desired.
Q: Do these barrels still have the smell of the whiskey in them?
A: the barrels do typically carry over much of the aroma of the whiskey
Q: WHATS IS THE WOOD....... IS IT AMERICAN OAK.....OR FRENCH OAK
A: these are American oak barrels
Q: Do you ship to Canada?
Q: Do you sell the wooden stopper for the used 5 gallon barrels?
A: we sell rubber gun stoppers that can be used but dont have access to spare wooden bungs at this time
Q: Are the barrels used just once?
A: the barrels typically are used a single time from the distillery before being sold
Q: How long have the barrels been empty? Is it possible to get a barrel that has just been emptied?
A: These were dumped 3/15/18. Unfortunately the distillery we work with dictates how soon we receive the barrels after they are bumped. We list the barrels for sale as soon as we receive them. The time will vary however the freshest we have received is a month since being dumped.
Q: Would these be good for aging whiskey, since they’ve been used for whiskey already?
A: The barrels will still have the char on the inside so they will provide the color and flavor profile but my pick up essence from the previous spirit
Q: Is this per barrel or a flat of barrels?
A: This cost would be per barrel
Q: Can you mention when they barrels were originally dumped?
A: This will vary but will have been in the last few months as of 2/12-barrles are marked with a fill date but not dump dates
